As one of only two public honors colleges in the nation, SMCM teaches and empowers students to lead responsible and thoughtful lives as global citizens. The new strategic plan addresses five goals selected by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee as instrumental for positioning the College as a premier institution of higher education now and in the years to come: Attract intellectually ambitious students who thrive in and respect a diverse, collaborative learning community Engage students in a rigorous, experiential, flexible, innovative academic environment that capitalizes on our unique geographical location Attract and retain a diverse staff and faculty who achieve excellence across the liberal arts in the teaching, scholarship, creative works, and practice of their disciplines Graduate prepared, responsible, and thoughtful global citizens and leaders Create and maintain state-of-the-art, modern facilities, systems, and infrastructure The Strategic Planning Steering Committee tasked with developing the new plan included faculty, staff, and student representatives from the College.
The plan includes an updated mission, vision, core values, goals, objectives, and metrics. The strategic plan marks a milestone for the College as it begins with a new, revitalized purpose.In , James Ptaszynski, strategic relations manager of Microsoft's higher education group, appointed James Morrison as a Microsoft scholar and asked Morrison to develop a CD ROM on how professors are using information technology tools in their work.

The capstone for the self-directed specialization will provide a learning experience that integrates what you learned in Everyday Leadership, Designing and Managing Organizations, and Strategic Management and apply that learning to an actual business situation faced by a company. The capstone deliverable consists of a strategic leadership and management plan covering the design and management.
